Trump Endorsed a Navy Vet Named Amir. MAGA Would Like a Refund.

This site spends most of its time documenting the movement's cruelty toward outsiders. Today, a rarer specimen for the collection: the machine turning on a man it was explicitly instructed to love.

Donald Trump endorsed Amir Hassan for Michigan's 8th Congressional District on Truth Social, with the standard trumpets: "It is my Great Honor to endorse Amir Hassan," praise for his Navy service, his law enforcement career, the works. Let us review the candidate's résumé, because it reads like it was generated by feeding the MAGA id into a machine and asking for its dream date.

Navy veteran... stationed at Guantanamo Bay, no less. Federal law enforcement officer. Flint, Michigan roots. Self-described America First Republican. Calls Israel "our strongest ally." Declares "zero tolerance for extremists." His campaign website states that he is a Christian. If you built this man in a lab, the lab would be audited for pandering.

And none of it mattered, because his name is Amir Hassan, and the replies arrived carrying torches.

"YOU ARE BEING MISLED, President Trump!" warned another. "This guy is a snake in the grass." A third went full scripture: "No way. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?", a verse about greed, deployed against a Navy veteran's congressional endorsement, which suggests the Bible is being read over there about as carefully as the candidate's website.

Because that is the punchline, and we did not write it: the website says Christian. Nobody checked. Nobody had to check, because the objection was never theological. The name filter fired before the facts could load, and the name filter does not read websites.

I. THE CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT

Understand what makes this entry scientifically precious. Every other time this movement rejects someone, there is chaff in the air: the target is a Democrat, or criticized Trump once in 2015, or supports some policy heresy. Here, every variable is controlled. The candidate is MAGA. The policies are MAGA. The biography is a MAGA campaign ad. The endorsement came from Trump personally, which is supposed to be the papal seal. The only remaining variable, the one thing left in the test tube, is a name that sounds like the people they have been taught to fear.

The result came back in hours, in public, in writing. "The party of ideas, not identity" just rejected all of its own ideas over an identity, and it did so against direct orders from the man it calls the boss. There is no more isolating this variable. The experiment has run. The bigotry is not downstream of the politics; it is upstream, and it outranks Trump himself.

II. THE FILE THIS BELONGS IN

Regular readers will recognize the machinery. It is the same reflex that told three American-born congresswomen to "go back" to countries they are from in the sense that nobody is: the belief that some names hold citizenship on a guest pass. It is the reflex Rep. Mace tried to write into the Constitution this spring. Mr. Hassan happens to be its first test subject who did everything right by the movement's own scorecard, including the part where he got the king's blessing, and it saved him nothing.

We would offer Mr. Hassan a welcome to the club, but frankly the club did not want him either until about five minutes ago, and our files suggest the feeling would not be mutual. What we can offer is the archive's honest condolence: sir, you brought a résumé to a name fight.
