  • He Chose the Zip Code First. Ten People Were Buying Groceries.

An eighteen-year-old drove more than three hours to Buffalo's East Side and murdered ten people at a Tops supermarket. He selected the store by searching for the zip code with the highest percentage of Black residents. The document he left cited the Great Replacement by name. A year earlier, the most-watched man in cable news had spent months telling three million viewers a tidier version of the same thing.

  • Tucker Carlson Says the Quiet Part Into a Camera, and Fox's Owner Signs Off

The men with the torches in Charlottesville chanted "you will not replace us." Four years later the most-watched host in cable news explained, to three million viewers, that the Democratic Party is trying to "replace the current electorate" with "more obedient voters from the Third World." The ADL asked Fox to fire him. Fox's owner wrote back that Tucker had actually rejected replacement theory... by restating it.

  • The Confederate Flag Entered the Capitol Today. Four Years of Civil War Never Managed It.

Filed near midnight, January 6. A mob broke into the Capitol today to stop the counting of electoral votes. This page is not going to pretend the story is election law. The crowd built a gallows on the Hill, flew the Confederate battle flag at the base of the Grant Memorial, carried it through the halls inside (something four years of Confederate arms never accomplished), and chased a lone Black officer up a staircase. Congress…

  • He Drove 650 Miles to Find Enough Mexicans. The Word He Used Was "Invasion."

Twenty-three people are dead in El Paso. The gunman drove more than 650 miles from the Dallas suburbs to reach a border city, and posted minutes before that his attack was "a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas." El Paso is one of the safest cities in America and was Mexican before it was Texan. He did not go there because of what it is. He went because of what he had been told…

  • Six Weeks After Christchurch, an American Teenager Answered the Brochure

On the last day of Passover, a 19-year-old walked into the Chabad of Poway and opened fire, killing Lori Gilbert-Kaye and wounding three, including the rabbi. He posted an open letter first, claiming Jews were running a "meticulously planned genocide of the European race." A month earlier he had tried to burn down a mosque and left Christchurch's name on the wall. Six weeks ago this page wrote that the Christchurch document was written to…

  • He Titled It "The Great Replacement." Fifty-One People Were at Friday Prayers.

An Australian gunman murdered 51 Muslim worshippers in two New Zealand mosques on Friday, and published a 74-page document first. Its title was three words: The Great Replacement. This site covers the American right, and this happened 8,000 miles away... which is exactly why it belongs here. The phrase is French, the argument is American, and the document was written to be copied.

  • He Posted "Invaders" Two Hours Before. Eleven People Were at Shabbat Services.

Saturday morning in Squirrel Hill, a gunman walked into the Tree of Life synagogue and murdered eleven people at Shabbat services, the deadliest antisemitic attack in American history. Two hours earlier he had posted his reason: a Jewish refugee agency "likes to bring invaders in that kill our people." Not "Jews" in the abstract. A specific charge, in a specific vocabulary, that had been circulating in American politics all autumn.

  • "Very Fine People": The President Reviews a Nazi March and Finds It Mixed

Men with torches marched through Charlottesville chanting "Jews will not replace us." One of them drove a car into a crowd and killed Heather Heyer. It took the President of the United States three days and two do-overs to land on his final answer: there were "very fine people on both sides." This page records all three attempts, because the third one was the honest one.

  • "Somebody Else's Babies": A Congressman Says the Quiet Part, in Twelve Words, on a Sunday

On Sunday, Rep. Steve King of Iowa tweeted twelve words in praise of the Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders: "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." He has spent the days since explaining that he meant culture. The sentence contains the word "babies." Babies do not have a culture yet. They have parents, and the parents are the part he can see.
