He Dimmed the Lights in the Oval Office and Played the Video. The Crosses Weren't Graves.

Cyril Ramaphosa came to Washington on Wednesday, May 21, to talk about trade and tariffs. He brought golfers as a goodwill gesture, which tells you what kind of meeting he had prepared for. What he got was a screening.

Partway through, in front of the press pool, Trump instructed staff to dim the lights in the Oval Office and play a video he said documented a genocide being carried out against white farmers in South Africa. He then presented a stack of printed articles as corroboration. Ramaphosa, visibly working to stay pleasant, said the footage did not represent government policy and pointed out that most murder victims in South Africa are Black.

I. THE CROSSES

The video's most striking sequence showed a long line of white crosses beside a road. Trump described them as the burial sites of murdered white farmers... "a thousand of them," he said, gesturing at the screen.

They are not graves and nobody is buried there. The footage was shot near Normandien, in KwaZulu-Natal, in September 2020. The crosses were a temporary memorial protest, erected along the roadside by demonstrators after the murder of a white farming couple, Glen and Vida Rafferty. They were taken down afterward. They marked a demonstration, not a cemetery.

So the centerpiece of the presentation was a real image, shown to a foreign head of state by the President of the United States, described as something it is not. That is the whole method of this genre in one prop: authentic footage, false caption, overwhelming emotional effect, and a correction that arrives days later to an audience one-tenth the size.

II. WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY

South Africa has a genuinely catastrophic murder rate. Farm attacks are real, often brutal, and a legitimate subject for a South African government that has struggled to police rural areas. None of that is in dispute here.

What is in dispute is the word "genocide," and the arithmetic answers it. White South Africans are roughly 9 percent of the population and roughly 1.8 percent of murder victims. They are, in other words, substantially less likely to be murdered than their Black compatriots in a country where about seventy-five people are killed every day. A campaign of extermination that leaves its targets safer than everyone else is not a campaign of extermination. It is a crime wave, and its main victims are Black South Africans, who go unmentioned in the video.

III. WHERE THIS CAME FROM

The "white genocide" thesis is the older, blunter sibling of the Great Replacement, and its parentage is not ambiguous: postwar European neo-Nazi circles in the 1950s, American Nazi Party literature in the 1970s, and then two formulations that still circulate. David Lane, imprisoned for his role in the terrorist group The Order, wrote the fourteen words. Bob Whitaker wrote the Mantra, whose slogan was "anti-racist is a code word for anti-white." This site's dossier traces the full lineage, including how the South African strand became the movement's favorite proof text: a country where white people are a minority, and therefore a preview.

It entered American government in August 2018, when the President tweeted instructions to his Secretary of State to study South African "land and farm seizures" and "the large scale killing of farmers," hours after seeing a segment about it on Fox. On Wednesday it became a state occasion.

Ramaphosa left with no trade deal and a lesson several other heads of state have now learned about the Oval Office lighting. The theory left with something better: a presidential endorsement, delivered on camera, in the room where American foreign policy is made.
