Texas Won. Bo French Looked at the Student Section and Saw Foreigners.

Texas beat Ohio State. The students went wild. And the Republican running statewide to regulate Texas oil and gas looked at a photo of them celebrating and decided the problem was their faces.

Pen-and-ink editorial cartoon: a man squints through a magnifying glass at his phone and shouts "Foreigners!" at a cheering student section of South Asian football fans in longhorn jerseys; one student replies, "We're juniors, sir."
EDITORIAL CARTOON -- COMMISSIONED ILLUSTRATION. Subject: Bo French's Sept. 13, 2026 posts calling a photo of South Asian students at a University of Texas football game evidence of Americans "displaced by foreigners." Generic figure; not a likeness of any real person.

Some wins are big enough that the whole state gets to enjoy them. The Longhorns' upset of Ohio State was one of those. Kids in burnt orange, screaming in the stands, having the best Saturday of the semester.

Bo French had a different reaction.

French is the Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, the office that regulates the state's oil and gas industry, on the ballot against Democratic state Rep. Jon Rosenthal of Houston. He is also the former chair of the Tarrant County Republican Party. On Sunday, September 13, he posted photos of University of Texas students of South Asian descent celebrating at the game, with this:

"Like body-cams exposed criminals, social media is exposing how many Americans have been displaced by foreigners. It's everywhere and far worse than any of us could imagine."

-- BO FRENCH, REPUBLICAN NOMINEE FOR TEXAS RAILROAD COMMISSIONER, SEPT. 13, 2026

Read that again. He opened with criminals. A photo of college kids at a football game, and the first comparison that came to mind was bodycam footage.

Then, in case anyone missed the point: "I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn't believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined."

The problem. Students. Enrolled at the flagship public university of the state he wants to help run, cheering for its football team, wearing its colors. French never says how he knows any of them are "foreigners." He doesn't have to. He looked at them, and that was enough. That's the whole trick. Brown skin is the evidence, and the verdict comes first.

I. THIS TIME, REPUBLICANS NOTICED

Credit where it's due, because it doesn't happen often. Texas Republicans said something, and some of them said the word.

Sen. John Cornyn: "This is the Republican nominee for statewide office. Are other Republican elected officials going to condemn the intolerance and racism, or look the other way while it becomes normalized. This is how great political parties self-destruct. Sad."

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows: "You can oppose immigration policy without demeaning people because of their race or ethnicity — this post has crossed the line." (The dash is his. We quote it as written.)

Former Speaker Dade Phelan called French unfit for office. State Rep. Drew Darby said he had "never seen conduct so unbecoming of a Railroad Commissioner or candidate." State Rep. Orlando Sanchez put it best: "Those young people in burnt orange weren't a 'problem.' They were Texans celebrating a hard-fought victory. Judging fellow Americans by the color of their skin or assuming they're 'foreigners' simply because they don't look like you is wrong, un-American, and has no place in our party or our state."

Good. All true. Now notice Cornyn's question, because it's the right one: are the rest of them going to condemn it, or look the other way? French is still the nominee. The party's voters picked him, and his name is still on the ballot under the R.

II. THE EXPLANATION

Then he explained. That's usually where it gets worse.

No apology. French went after Cornyn instead: "He and the other America Last losers are mad that Texas Republicans are starting to put America First." Then, Monday morning on The Mark Davis Show, he found the respectable version:

"DEI was discriminating against deserving people, so that these liberal bureaucrat administrators at University of Texas and places like that could select their preferred groups of people. Well, that is what is racism."

-- BO FRENCH, THE MARK DAVIS SHOW, SEPT. 14, 2026

Oh good, the explanation.

Walk through it. The photo showed students at a football game. Not an admissions file, not a policy, not an administrator. French doesn't know a single one of their names, grades or birthplaces. The only information he had was what they looked like. Somewhere between Sunday and Monday, "displaced by foreigners" became "undeserving beneficiaries of DEI," and the only thing linking the two claims is the color of the kids in the picture.

That's the move. Swap one grievance for another and hope nobody notices you never changed the evidence. First they were foreigners. Then they were diversity admits. Either way, the students in the photo don't belong, and either way, French decided that by looking.

It's the same Great Replacement story this archive keeps filing under new names. "Displaced" is doing all the work. Somebody real was supposed to be in those seats, and the somebody real is always white.

III. NOT HIS FIRST TIME

None of this is out of character. Last year, while he was Tarrant County GOP chair, French posted a poll asking whether Jews or Muslims were the bigger threat to America. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick called on him to resign. He didn't. The party then made him its statewide nominee anyway.

That's the part worth sitting with. A man who asked his followers which religious minority to fear more ran in a Republican primary and won. Nobody should be shocked by what he posted after that. The primary voters already saw it.

We ran a cleaner version of this experiment in July, when MAGA turned on a Trump-endorsed Navy veteran because his name was Amir Hassan. Every credential in order, and the base only needed his name. Bo French only needed a photo.

Rosenthal, his opponent, summed up the race in one line: voters can pick "a career engineer" or "a career crap poster who just wants to make inflammatory statements on social media." Texas votes November 3.

The kids were celebrating a win for their school. The Republican nominee saw an invasion. Add one more to the ever growing list.
