  • "I apologize for my white baby"

    A vintage black-and-white photograph of a mother spoon-feeding a baby in a high chair

This kind of "article" is what conservatives have boiled systemic racism down to. They do not understand the concept and can't see how their denial of it's existence just bolsters the arguments for it. No one thinks your baby is racist, Karen... But we know it's mother is.

  • The Number Three Republican in the House Ran the Ads. Then Buffalo Happened.

Official congressional portrait of Representative Elise Stefanik of New York

In the autumn of 2021, Rep. Elise Stefanik, the third-ranking Republican in the House, ran Facebook ads warning of a "PERMANENT ELECTION INSURRECTION" in which amnesty for 11 million immigrants would "overthrow our current electorate." Eight months later a gunman in Buffalo killed ten people, citing the theory those ads describe. Her office says she has never promoted replacement theory. The ads are archived, and the word "electorate" is doing all the work.

  • He Chose the Zip Code First. Ten People Were Buying Groceries.

Flowers and tributes at the memorial to the victims of the Tops supermarket shooting on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo, New York

An eighteen-year-old drove more than three hours to Buffalo's East Side and murdered ten people at a Tops supermarket. He selected the store by searching for the zip code with the highest percentage of Black residents. The document he left cited the Great Replacement by name. A year earlier, the most-watched man in cable news had spent months telling three million viewers a tidier version of the same thing.

  • No One Had Ever Called Him That in Uniform. Today It Went Into the Congressional Record.

Editorial cartoon: a Black U.S. Capitol Police officer at a hearing-room witness table asks IS THIS AMERICA? while a committee listens from the dais under a banner reading July 27, 2021

Six months after the mob, the select committee held its first hearing today, and Officer Harry Dunn of the Capitol Police put January 6's vocabulary under oath. He told the crowd he had voted. A woman in a pink MAGA shirt turned to the others: "You hear that, guys?" Then came the word, from her, then from twenty people at once. In January we wrote that the flags told you what the day was. Today…

  • Tucker Carlson Says the Quiet Part Into a Camera, and Fox's Owner Signs Off

Tucker Carlson speaking at an event in December 2020.

The men with the torches in Charlottesville chanted "you will not replace us." Four years later the most-watched host in cable news explained, to three million viewers, that the Democratic Party is trying to "replace the current electorate" with "more obedient voters from the Third World." The ADL asked Fox to fire him. Fox's owner wrote back that Tucker had actually rejected replacement theory... by restating it.

  • Mike Pompeo denounces "Multiculturalism"

Mike Pompeo speaking at a podium

On his last day of work, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweets, from his official US government account... "Woke-ism, multiculturalism, all the -isms -- they're not who America is. They distort our glorious founding and what this country is all about. Our enemies stoke these divisions because they know they make us weaker." @SecPompeo 1/19/2021 This is pretty clear that Secretary Pompeo thinks that "multiculturalism" distorts "our glorious founding." Why? Because... White. No dogwhistle needed…

  • The Confederate Flag Entered the Capitol Today. Four Years of Civil War Never Managed It.

A wooden gallows with a hanging noose, erected by the crowd outside the United States Capitol, framing the Capitol dome

Filed near midnight, January 6. A mob broke into the Capitol today to stop the counting of electoral votes. This page is not going to pretend the story is election law. The crowd built a gallows on the Hill, flew the Confederate battle flag at the base of the Grant Memorial, carried it through the halls inside (something four years of Confederate arms never accomplished), and chased a lone Black officer up a staircase. Congress…

  • He Drove 650 Miles to Find Enough Mexicans. The Word He Used Was "Invasion."

Community gathering in El Paso, Texas in the week after the August 2019 Walmart shooting

Twenty-three people are dead in El Paso. The gunman drove more than 650 miles from the Dallas suburbs to reach a border city, and posted minutes before that his attack was "a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas." El Paso is one of the safest cities in America and was Mexican before it was Texan. He did not go there because of what it is. He went because of what he had been told…

  • "Go Back": Three of Them Were Born Here, and the House Put the Word "Racist" in the Record

Official 116th Congress portrait of Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, a naturalized citizen born in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The President told four congresswomen of color to "go back" to the countries "from which they came." Three were born in the Bronx, Detroit and Cincinnati; the fourth has been a citizen longer than his youngest son has been alive. The House condemned the tweets as racist, on the record, 240 to 187. Then a rally crowd chanted "send her back," and he let it roll for thirteen seconds.

  • Six Weeks After Christchurch, an American Teenager Answered the Brochure

Federal investigators' photograph of graffiti left at the Dar-ul-Arqam mosque in Escondido, California, after an attempted arson in March 2019

On the last day of Passover, a 19-year-old walked into the Chabad of Poway and opened fire, killing Lori Gilbert-Kaye and wounding three, including the rabbi. He posted an open letter first, claiming Jews were running a "meticulously planned genocide of the European race." A month earlier he had tried to burn down a mosque and left Christchurch's name on the wall. Six weeks ago this page wrote that the Christchurch document was written to…
