The President told four congresswomen of color to "go back" to the countries "from which they came." Three were born in the Bronx, Detroit and Cincinnati; the fourth has been a citizen longer than his youngest son has been alive. The House condemned the tweets as racist, on the record, 240 to 187. He Posted "Invaders" Two Hours Before. Eleven People Were at Shabbat Services.

Saturday morning in Squirrel Hill, a gunman walked into the Tree of Life synagogue and murdered eleven people at Shabbat services, the deadliest antisemitic attack in American history. Two hours earlier he had posted his reason: a Jewish refugee agency "likes to bring invaders in that kill our people." Not "Jews" in the abstract. A specific charge, in a specific vocabulary, that had been circulating in American politics all autumn.

Men with torches marched through Charlottesville chanting "Jews will not replace us." One of them drove a car into a crowd and killed Heather Heyer. "Somebody Else's Babies": A Congressman Says the Quiet Part, in Twelve Words, on a Sunday

On Sunday, Rep. Steve King of Iowa tweeted twelve words in praise of the Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders: "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." He has spent the days since explaining that he meant culture. The sentence contains the word "babies." Babies do not have a culture yet. They have parents, and the parents are the part he can see.
