Tennessee's only majority-Black congressional district was 61.1 percent Black. In May the legislature repealed its own 54-year ban on mid-decade redistricting and cut Memphis into three pieces that came out 27, 28 and 32 percent. A Congressman Called Them "Racist Thugs" With $240 Billion. We Checked Every Word.

Rep. Chuy García put fourteen seconds of fury on Facebook: $240 billion for "racist thugs to terrorize and kill people on our streets," and nothing for healthcare or housing. Strong words invite checking, so we checked every one. The arithmetic is real, "racist" is a finding two federal courts made before the Supreme Court stepped in, and the count of people killed on the streets is at least five.

In the Whitest Towns in New Jersey, 9 Percent Say the Schools Are Segregated

In New Jersey towns where one resident in a hundred is Black, 68 percent of voters say the local schools have "a good mix" of races. A Fairleigh Dickinson survey experiment matched what 1,211 voters say about their own towns against the Census data for those same towns... and then found the single question that makes some of them see the fence.
