Republican Tennessee State Representative Sheila Butt
The story of Tennessee Republican Sheila Butt and her call for the formation of the “NAAWP” has been getting a lot of play in the media this week. She certainly deserves a mention on this website but I’m afraid that any attempt at a take down would pale in comparison to the one done by The Wonkette. Here are a few tidbits from her article.
Gather round, little children, your Tennessee Wonkette has a nice story for you! It is about one of our august state representatives, a gentlelady by the name of Sheila Butt, who once said there would be no global warming if we used more hairspray, but this is not about that. This is about the fact that Sheila is Not Racist. Everybody is being mean to her and saying she is racist, though, because she went on the Facebook recently to comment on a nice note from the Council on American-Islamic Relations encouraging Republicans to stop hating Muslims so much. Butt said what we REALLY NEED is a “Council on Christian Relations” and a “NAAWP,” which some dumb liberal media types are dumbly and liberally assuming might stand for National Association For The Advancement Of White People, but they are wrong.
The story is actually a nice look into the mind of a racist Republican who no doubt actually believes that she is indeed NOT a racist.
Over the past few weeks, Fox News and it’s Conservative Media clones have been madly pushing their anti-government agenda by using Nevada Rancher Cliven Bundy as their new hero. Conservative Media heroes like Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have spearheaded their attacks of “Big Government” by trying to fan the flames of this stand-off between the rancher and the Federal Government… And many Republican elected officials have rushed to show support of Bundy.
Registered Republican Cliven Bundy has been in a long fight with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over grazing rights. Many, many ranchers graze their herds on Federal lands and, in exchange, pay grazing fees to the United States Government. Bundy, however, has refused to pay these fees and has continued to graze his herds on Federal land and has amassed over $1,000,000 in fees and fines. He refuses to pay and continues to use taxpayer land to expand his own personal wealth.
Two weeks ago, this situation came to a head as Federal BLM agents moved in to seize Bundy’s cows as they were eating taxpayer grasses. The conservative media rushed in and before you know it, hundreds of armed militia and private citizens hurried to the scene with assault weapons in hand. These so-called Patriots then pointed their weapons at Federal Agents and began threatening open rebellion on television. We all watched in disbelief as the BLM backed down due to concerns that agents and citizens would certainly be hurt or killed if they did not.
The Conservative Media exploded with this victory. Cliven Bundy soon appeared on every major news program on Fox News, every major Republican radio show including the fringe show of ultra-right wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. all of them hailed Bundy as the new hero of the American Right. Bundy began holding regular news conferences and the one he held this week finally exposed him.
Here are his statements as reported by the New York Times:
“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids—and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch—they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.
“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”
Here are his statements on video:
Time and time again, these “heroes” get exposed for who they really are. Bundy is trying to complain about African-Americans sucking from the public teet while he uses public land for his own profit. He doesn’t even see the irony… Nor does he see the blatant racism.
Congratulations, Conservative Media. You gave this guy a nationwide microphone and now he has used it to show once again that Republicans are Racists.
Oklahoma Republican House Majority Leader Dennis Johnson
The Republican outreach to minorities continues! The new Republican party wants non-white citizens to understand that they aren’t just the party of old, white guys. The GOP is now opening the tent wide for people of all creeds and colors.
Continuing that effort, Oklahoma Republican House Majority Leader Dennis Johnson used his time during a floor debate to discuss effective strategies for small business owners.
“There’s such a thing called niche marketing,” he began. “You find out what you do better than somebody else and that’s what you market.”
I’m with ya, Dennis. Niche Marketing. I got it.
“Then you get the reward of success. People come back to you,” he continued. “They like the service they get, and they don’t ask me—they might try to Jew me down on a price, that’s fine. You know what? That’s free market as well.”
The “new” GOP wants to reach out to people of all colors but they simply can’t stop their true inner feelings from surfacing.
Immediately after this comment, someone hastily whispers to Leader Johnson and he turns back to the mic to apologize.
“I apologize to the Jews. They’re good small businessmen as well,” Johnson said with a laugh.
Double facepalm. They still don’t get it.
In a later interview with The Oklahoman, Johnson explained that it was a term used in his youth that somehow bubbled up out of nowhere. He said that the comment “came out of one of the wrinkles of my brain and it was not something that was intentional.”
Hmmmm… Where have I heard that before? No one has to convince me that, deep in one of the wrinkles of their brain, Republicans are racists.
County Commisioner Jim Gile – Saline County Kansas
Here we go again. Another old, white Republican elected official forgets that he’s not among his cronies and utters another racist comment on the record. Republican Saline County Commissioner Jim Gile used the term “nigger-rigging” during a commission discussion about hiring an architect to work on a county building.
County residents immediately started calling for his resignation which forced Mr. Gile to apologize.
The Salina Journal, a local newspaper, reported the incident like this:
In a recording made by County Clerk Don Merriman of the study session, Gile, who is white, can be heard to say the county needed to hire an architect to design the improvements rather than “nigger-rigging it.”
His comment brought laughter from others in the room. Salinan Ray Hruska, who attends most commission meetings and study sessions, asked Gile what he said.
“Afro-Americanized,” Gile replied.
“He’s like that congressman from Alaska,” Commission Chairman Randy Duncan can be heard to say of Gile’s comment.
Gile told the newspaper that he knew the term he used from when he was growing up and that he meant to say “jury-rigged.” He also insisted that he is not racist, noting that he “has a black friend” that he considers close enough to be a sister.
“I am not a prejudiced person,” Gile went on to say. “I have built Habitat homes for colored people.”
Come on, Jim. You slipped up and spoke in language you ordinarily reserve for talk among your old, white friends. Just admit it and quit. Staying in the public eye is just going to remind us all that Republicans are racists.

With it’s recent “autopsy” and declarations of the necessity to re-brand itself to a more diverse set of voters, the Republican Party is just days into their campaign to put lipstick on their pig. They have no desire to change their positions on any of the policies that lost them the 2012 election, but they do want to stop saying what they think when other people can hear what they are saying. Reince Priebus, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, has declared that Republicans need to stop saying “stupid” and “idiotic” things in public. Well, already an elected Republican Congressman has shown that a lot of GOP members just can’t help themselves.
In an interview with public radio station KRBD, Representative Don Young of Alaska launched his appeal to bring more Latinos into the “Big Tent” of the Republican Party. “I used to own — my father had a ranch. We used to hire 50 to 60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,” he said. “You know, it takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now.”
In a released statement, Representative Young did not apologize but instead explained that the phrase was simply ingrained into his being because he used it when he was growing up. That’s right Don. You used the term “Wetback” (a derogatory term for Mexican migrant workers) because you have always used it… Because you’re a racist.
“I used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in central California,” he said. “I know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays and I meant no disrespect.”
It was a racial slur back then and still is today, you ignorant fool. But Don Young doesn’t see it that way. I argue that most Republicans will take his reason for using the slur as perfectly acceptable… And that is why I continue to believe that Republicans are racists.
Letters to the Editor: Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative
When one thinks of the mindset of a Republican in Arkansas, it is not hard to imagine them being pretty extreme. It is along that line of thinking that I will present quotes from the book “Letters to the Editor: Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative” written by Republican Legislator Jon Hubbard of Jonesboro, Arkansas.
For my racist readers (and I know you’re there,) this is a book that you’re going to love. It’s not only chock full of bigoted statements, it even includes the prediction of a full-on race war similar to what we saw in Nazi Germany. It’s yet another peek into the mind of another elected member of the GOP. It’s filled with contradictions and horrible interpretations of Biblical scripture.
Here is a list of some of the choice quotes as compiled by the Arkansas Times.
Slavery was good for black people:
“… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.” (Pages 183-89)
If you think slavery was bad, you should have seen Africa:
African Americans must “understand that even while in the throes of slavery, their lives as Americans are likely much better than they ever would have enjoyed living in sub-Saharan Africa.”
“Knowing what we know today about life on the African continent, would an existence spent in slavery have been any crueler than a life spent in sub-Saharan Africa?” (Pages 93 and 189)
Black people are ignorant:
“Wouldn’t life for blacks in America today be more enjoyable and successful if they would only learn to appreciate the value of a good education?” (Page 184)
Integration was bad for white people and black people are lazy:
“… one of the stated purposes of school integration was to bring black students up to a level close to that of white students. But, to the great disappointment of everyone, the results of this theory worked exactly in reverse of its intended purpose, and instead of black students rising to the educational levels previously attained by white students, the white students dropped to the level of black students. To make matters worse the lack of discipline and ambition of black students soon became shared by their white classmates, and our educational system has been in a steady decline ever since.” (Page 27)
It’s basically hopeless:
“… will it ever become possible for black people in the United States of America to firmly establish themselves as inclusive and contributing members of society within this country?” (Page 187)
Immigration is bad:
..the immigration issue, both legal and illegal… will lead to planned wars or extermination. Although now this seems to be barbaric and uncivilized, it will at some point become as necessary as eating and breathing.” (Page 9)
Don’t forget Nazi Germany:
“American Christians are assuming a similar stance as did the citizens of Germany during Hitler’s rise to power.” (Page 158)
Now that should whet your appetite. Get out there and grab a copy. Only one elected Republican wrote it but he’s far from being alone in sharing the book’s sentiments. Finally, there is an owner’s manual for the modern Republican “Christian” mind.
Here is another in our series of videos where Republicans aren’t necessarily racists… Just misogynists. Republican candidate Todd Akin of Missouri sits on CNN and boldly states that in cases of “legitimate rape” that the body will not allow pregnancy to occur. He says “from what I understand from doctors” to qualify the statement (and give it that science-y feel) but the fact is that he’s pulling this right out of his ass. Somehow, the female body can prevent pregnancy if it is raped but is helpless to prevent unwanted pregnancy in all other cases.
This is more made up “science” from Republican politicians. Notice how he speaks with authority becuase he needs this statement to be true. Republicans are laying the cards out on how they feel about women and minorities in this country, lately. Listen to them and you will hear the truth. One of the keys to having women not despise them is if they can convince women (and partisan white males) that real rape doesn’t cause pregnancy then maybe their anti-choice political views start to make sense. I know it is twisted logic but it’s simply what these people are trying to do.
My guess is that Todd Akin just put a winnable Republican House seat into play and women could have a chance to send him back to the primordial ooze he crawled out of this November.
This one speaks for itself. The Governor says people would have rather voted on Civil Rights than fight for them in the 60’s… But he has forgotten one thing… The people who were demanding their civil rights couldn’t vote. You can’t vote for your civil rights when you don’t have civil rights.
This just goes to show that even when one spends months convincing you that he is sane… Republicans are Racists.
